DRIVING IN Jersey In Jersey we drive on the left (same as UK), petrol is cheap and there is no road tax. There are many, many small country lanes which do need some negotiating, so a large car is not recommended. There is an Island-wide speed limit of 40mph. In addition, there are 10, 20 and 30mph restrictions in many built up areas. A yellow painted line across the road surface at a junction indicates entry into a major road and you must ensure it is clear and safe for you to pull out. A yellow grid at a junction means do not enter the box unless your exit is clear. There are also many 'Filter in Turns' which means just that. If you should have an accident, however small, you must inform a police officer and you must not move your vehicle. In country parishes inform a honourary policeman, ask a local how to find them (originally they were farmers and gave their valuable services to the parish for nothing). Seat belts must be worn and children under 14 years must travel in the back, with seat belts. Finally, please remember your driving licence for each person driving as you won't be able to hire a car without one. Driving on the left hand side, narrow country lanes and special local regulations means that driving in the Channel Islands is different from driving on the Continent : At certain crossroads you will find a sign indicating Filter in Turn. This means that there is no right of way, every one takes their turn to move forward. Caution is required at first. Speed Limits The maximum speed limit on the islands is 55 kmh, with some areas limited to 40 kmh. There is no give way to the right or left on the islands unless specified by a road sign. Parking is free on public roads, with special limtations indicated by a 'Disc Zone' or a 'Pay Card Zone' sign. The use of the disc or pay card is very simple, and they can be obtained at numerous retail outlets, aswell as Tourist Offices and Police stations. In case of accident with serious damage or injured passengers please call the police. Petrol can not be purchased on Sundays in Guernsey. The use of safety belts is compulsary. You may come accross cattle or people riding horses on country lanes - vigilance is required at all times. Other Laws Documentation: always carry your driving licence, vehicle registration document (V5), and certificate of motor insurance. If your licence does not incorporate a photograph ensure you carry your passport to validate the licence. If the vehicle is not registered in your name, carry a letter from the registered owner giving you permission to drive.
